Collection: UV Clarifiers & Sterilizers

UV clarifiers and UV sterilizers kill the suspended single-cell algae that turns pond water green — water passes over an ultraviolet bulb, algae cells are destroyed, and clarity returns within days without adding anything to the water. Fountain Depot carries pond UV units from Aquascape and Pondmaster, in stock in Markham, Ontario and shipping across Canada.

Which UV unit is right for your pond?

For an all-in-one solution, the Aquascape UltraKlean Pressurized Biological Pond Filter combines mechanical and biological filtration with a high-output ultraviolet clarifier in a single pressurized unit. If you already have filtration and just need green-water control, the Aquascape UltraKlear UV Clarifier plumbs into your existing circuit. The Pondmaster Submersible & Inline UV Clarifier (10, 20, and 40 watt) installs either fully submerged or inline, making it a flexible fit for ponds and water features of most sizes.

UV works on the algae you can't net out; it does not remove the nutrients feeding it. Pair a UV unit with pond filtration, the algae-control program, and a properly sized pond pump for lasting clarity. Not sure which wattage suits your pond volume and flow rate? Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a UV clarifier and a UV sterilizer?
The hardware is the same — the difference is UV dose. At higher flow rates the unit acts as a clarifier, killing suspended green-water algae. Slow the flow through the same unit and the longer exposure sterilizes, also affecting some bacteria and parasites. Most pond installations run in clarifier mode for green-water control.

Will a UV clarifier kill string algae?
No. UV only affects the single-cell algae suspended in the water passing through the unit. String algae attached to rocks and liner needs the phosphate-binding and beneficial-bacteria approach in our algae-control collection.

Can I use a pond UV sterilizer on an aquarium?
Inline UV units can be plumbed into large aquarium or quarantine systems, provided the flow rate through the unit matches the manufacturer's rating for the wattage. For typical home aquariums, a purpose-built aquarium UV is usually the better fit — contact us and we'll tell you honestly which is right.

When should I run a UV clarifier in Canada?
Green water peaks with sunlight and warmth — run the UV from spring startup through fall. Remove and store the unit before freeze-up, and replace the bulb each season, since UV output drops well before the bulb visibly fails.

Do UV clarifiers harm fish or beneficial bacteria?
UV treats only the water passing through the sealed chamber, so fish are unaffected. The beneficial bacteria colonized on your filter media and pond surfaces are also unaffected; only free-floating microorganisms in the water column are exposed.
