Liner math is where builds go wrong
Length plus twice the depth plus two feet of overlap - in both directions. Order the liner short and the fix is a seam in the middle of your pond. Send us the dig dimensions and we will size the liner, underlayment and pipe before you order.
The Build Order That Never Gets Re-Dug
Every pond and waterfall is the same stack: excavation, underlayment, liner, plumbing, equipment, rock. The material on this page is that stack, and buying it in the right sizes the first time is most of what separates a weekend build from a season-long argument with a hole in the ground.
The liner is the decision that cannot be cheap. 45 mil EPDM is fish-safe, flexible at Canadian temperatures and rated for decades buried under rock - and it must be sized by the formula, not the eyeball: length plus twice the maximum depth plus two feet of overlap, applied to both dimensions. The underlayment beneath it is what protects that investment from roots and stone. Tape, seam splice and cover tape handle the joins where a single sheet will not reach.
Plumbing is the quiet variable. Flexible PVC follows the trench without elbows, but diameter decides how much of your pump's flow survives the run - when in doubt, go one size up. Add a check valve on any vertical run and a fill valve if you want the water level to look after itself. Length plus twice the maximum depth plus two feet of overlap - calculated for both length and width. A 10x8 pond dug 2 feet deep needs a sheet roughly 16x14.
Round up, always. Excess trims off at the edge; a shortage means a seam in open water. Send the dimensions and we will do the math with you.

Yes. The liner is what holds the water; the geotextile underlayment is what protects the liner from every root, stone and frost movement in the soil beneath it for the next twenty years.
Skipping it saves a small percentage of the build cost and risks the single most expensive component in the pond.

The EPDM liner we stock is fish- and plant-safe, and it stays flexible through Canadian freeze-thaw cycles - which is why it is the standard for ecosystem ponds rather than cheaper PVC sheeting.
Rinse the liner before stocking and follow normal pond start-up: fill, dechlorinate, start bacteria, then fish.

Match it to the pump outlet at minimum, and go one size up on longer runs. Friction loss in undersized flexible pipe is the invisible tax on every foot of head, and it is the usual culprit when a new waterfall runs weaker than the pump rating promised.

On the vertical pipe out of the skimmer or pump vault. When the pump stops, the check valve prevents the water standing in the plumbing from draining backward and flooding the skimmer.
On any build with a BioFalls above pond level, treat it as standard equipment rather than an option.

A small to mid-size pond or pondless waterfall is a genuine weekend-or-two DIY project if the material list is right before the shovel goes in - that list being right is the part we handle free.
