Shop De-Icers by Horsepower
Horsepower decides how much open water you hold. Voltage decides which version of that model you order - it is not a plug swap.
The smallest de-icer in the range. Suited to a single dock, a boat lift or a modest pond where you need one area kept open through freeze-up. 120V, three-year warranty, supplied with 20 ft suspension ropes.
The most common choice on Ontario waterfronts. Same horsepower in both versions - the only difference is the supply voltage at your site. The H in 3400HD means 240V, not heavy duty.
The largest de-icer Kasco builds, for marinas, multi-slip docks and larger areas of open water. As above, the two versions differ only by supply voltage.
Alongside keeping water open, cold-water bacteria and fall treatments cut the organic load that causes winter fish kill under the ice. Dose before freeze-up for the best result.
Order before freeze-up, not after
De-icers sell out in October and the ice does not wait. Tell us what you are protecting and the voltage available at the dock, and we will spec the unit and cord length while there is still time to install it properly.
A De-Icer Does Not Melt Ice. It Stops Ice Forming.
The unit hangs below the surface and drives a column of warmer water up from below. Water at depth sits a few degrees above freezing all winter, and moving it upward keeps a patch of surface from setting. Nothing is being heated - the de-icer is simply refusing to let that water sit still long enough to freeze.
That mechanism decides where you point it. Aimed at a dock crib or a boat lift, it protects the structure from ice pressure, which is what causes most winter damage on Ontario waterfronts. Aimed into open water on a pond, it holds a hole that lets trapped gases escape from under the ice sheet, which is what prevents winterkill in a stocked pond.
Two things get ordered wrong. The first is voltage: the H in 3400HD and 4400HD indicates a 240V supply, not a tougher unit, and the horsepower is identical to the 120V version. The second is cord length, measured to the actual outlet rather than to the shore. Send us the dock layout and the supply and we will get both right. Planning further ahead? De-icers get ordered in a hurry once the forecast turns. Here is what to settle first.

Voltage, and nothing else. Both are 3/4 HP. The 3400D runs on 120V and the 3400HD runs on 240V. The same applies to the 4400D and 4400HD at 1 HP.
The H does not stand for heavy duty and the HD models are not built for harsher conditions. Check the supply at your dock or shoreline outlet before ordering - it is a different unit, not a different plug.

It depends on how much open water you need to hold and how exposed the site is. The 1/2 HP 2400D suits a single dock, a boat lift or a small pond. The 3/4 HP units are the most common choice on Ontario waterfronts, and the 1 HP units cover marinas and multi-slip docks.

It does not heat anything. The unit hangs below the surface and drives warmer water up from depth, where water sits a few degrees above freezing all winter. Keeping that water moving prevents the surface from setting.
Because it works by circulation rather than heat, the opening you get depends on mounting angle and depth as much as on horsepower.

Not to run one, but a thermostat panel is worth the money. It switches the unit on only below a set water temperature rather than running it continuously through the season, which makes a real difference to winter hydro.

Indirectly, yes. Winterkill happens when a pond seals under ice and gases from decomposition build up with no way out. Holding an opening lets those gases escape.
On deeper ponds, diffused aeration run through winter does the same job while also circulating the whole column. Tell us the depth and we will advise which is the better fit.
