What a course pond is up against
Most course ponds do two jobs at once: they hold irrigation water and they sit in play. Left still, they get worse at both, and the irrigation side usually degrades before anyone complains about the view.
Nutrient load off the turf
Irrigation ponds collect fertilizer runoff from fairways and greens. That feeds algae and aquatic weeds, and a still pond has no way of working through it on its own.
Algae reaching the intake
Filamentous mats and suspended algae end up on intake screens and filters. Moving the water column keeps growth from concentrating in the part of the pond you draw from.
Anaerobic water at the bottom
A pond that stratifies goes anaerobic near the bottom, builds muck and starts to smell — noticeable around the clubhouse, and it is the same water you put back on the turf.

Surface area
In acres, or feet by feet. As a starting point we plan roughly 1 HP of fountain or aerator per acre for water-quality goals; a signature-hole display is often sized up past that for the visual.
Average depth
Decides whether a surface unit or bottom diffused aeration is the right approach, and how much of the water column you will actually turn over.
Distance to power
From the water's edge to the nearest panel, and what service is there — 120V, 240V or three-phase. This sets cable length and panel spec, and on a course it often sets the location too.
A few things are specific to courses. Rural sites often assume 3 to 5 HP of aeration means bringing in three-phase service: Kasco's 3.1 and 5.1 models run on standard single-phase 240V, and the three-phase 3.3 and 5.3 include a CA-3235 control panel where you do have it. Spray pattern and height are worth setting against prevailing wind so the plume isn't wetting a green or a bunker face, and against sight lines from the tee before the pattern is chosen rather than after. And everything comes out before freeze-up — fountains are pulled ahead of ice, which is a job to schedule rather than discover. Where you need open water through the winter, around a pump intake or a dock structure, that is a de-icer's job and not a fountain's.
For a signature hole or the clubhouse pond we specify Kasco J-Series multi-pattern fountains, which run from 3/4 HP to 7 HP with interchangeable spray patterns, or the AquaMaster Masters Series — patterns named Ace, Birdie, Par and Eagle, and a long-standing choice on large course ponds — with LED light kits for evening events and clubhouse dining views. Where water quality matters more than the look, a Kasco surface aerator moves the most water per horsepower, independently tested at up to 3.0 lbs of oxygen per horsepower-hour by Auburn University and ETL listed to UL and CSA standards; on deep irrigation ponds RobustAire diffused aeration works from the bottom up with the compressor onshore, so there is no electricity in the water. For open water through the winter, a Kasco de-icer holds it through Canadian conditions.
