A dugout is a working water asset — livestock water, irrigation supply, sometimes stocked fish. Left still, it stratifies: the bottom layer loses oxygen, nutrients feed a summer algae bloom, and organic matter settles as muck. Cattle drink less of poor-tasting, algae-laden water, and under snow-covered ice a stocked dugout can lose its fish over a single winter.
- For most dugouts the answer is diffused aeration, not a fountain. The compressor sits onshore in a cabinet and pushes air through weighted tubing to diffusers on the floor — no electricity in the water, and it is efficient in deep water, which is exactly what a dugout is.

What a still dugout costs you
None of this arrives all at once. It shows up as a dugout that holds less usable water every year, and stock water you would not drink yourself.
Cattle drink less
Poor-tasting, algae-laden water reduces water intake. Quality is the first thing to go when a dugout stratifies and the bottom layer runs out of oxygen.
Winterkill under the ice
Snow-covered ice cuts off oxygen entirely. In a stocked dugout that is a total loss over one winter, and you do not find out until spring.
Algae, muck and odour
Without circulation, nutrients feed summer blooms and organic matter settles on the bottom as muck — taking depth, capacity and the smell of the water with it.

Length and width
Approximate, in feet, is fine. On a dugout that is easier to give than acres, and it is what sets how much air the water needs and how many diffusers go in.
Depth
Dugouts are deep for their surface area, which is why bottom diffused aeration suits them. Depth also decides how much of the water column you actually turn over.
Distance to power
From the nearest service to the water, and what is there — 120V or 240V. If there is nothing at the dugout at all, say so. That is the common case, not a problem.
What the water is for changes the answer. Livestock water is about quality and intake all year; irrigation supply is mostly about keeping algae out through summer; stocked fish are about oxygen under the ice. Where the goal is maximum summer oxygen — heavily stocked water or algae-prone irrigation — a surface aerator is the stronger tool: Kasco units are independently tested at up to 3.0 lbs of oxygen per horsepower-hour (Auburn University) and are ETL listed to UL and CSA standards. The practical detail on a farm is voltage. The Kasco 3.1 and 5.1 run on standard single-phase 240V, so a rural property with no three-phase service can still run 3 to 5 HP of aeration.
Power is usually the binding constraint, and it is the reason shore-mounted equipment wins on most dugouts: the cabinet can sit at the building end of the run, and only the air line goes down to the water. If the nearest panel is a long way off, tell us the distance before you spend money on trenching — we would rather talk you through what is realistic than sell you a system you cannot feed.
