Start with what the water is actually doing. Most ponds need two or three of these working together rather than one product doing everything.
Treat what algae feeds on rather than the bloom you can already see. Phosphate binders starve it, and in Canada that approach avoids the regulatory restrictions that apply to contact algaecides.
Bacteria digest the leaves, muck and organic load sitting on the bottom - the fuel for next season's bloom. Dose through the warm months and keep aeration running while they work.
Dye tints the water and cuts the sunlight penetration algae and submerged weed depend on. The cheapest preventive step there is, and the one most people skip.
For suspended green water specifically. A UV clarifier kills single-celled algae as water passes through the unit, which is the one algae problem chemistry alone struggles with.
Mechanical removal for rooted and floating weed. Cutting and raking pulls the organic material out of the water instead of letting it sink and feed next year's growth - do it before the bacteria dose, not after.
Food, water conditioners and shelter for stocked ponds. Ammonia and alkalinity control matter most after a heavy die-off or a big water change.

Treat the Cause, Not the Bloom
Contact algaecides are regulated pest-control products in Canada, and they only address the algae already in front of you. Kill a bloom and the nutrients that grew it are still there, which is why ponds treated that way go green again within weeks. The approach that holds through a season works on what algae feeds on instead.
Three layers do the work. Pond dye limits the sunlight algae and submerged weed depend on. An iron-based phosphate binder locks up the key nutrient so new growth has little to feed on. Beneficial bacteria digest the leaves, muck and organic load on the bottom before it becomes next month's bloom. Run together, they treat the system rather than the symptom.
The multiplier on all three is oxygen. A well-aerated pond resists algae naturally and needs fewer treatments year over year, which is why we so often end up recommending aeration to someone who arrived asking about chemicals. For suspended green water specifically, a UV clarifier is the one tool that outperforms chemistry outright.

Usually not. Contact algaecides are regulated pest-control products in Canada and only treat algae that has already grown. Kill the bloom and the nutrients that produced it remain.

The bigger risk is oxygen. Keep aeration running through a heavy algae die-off, because decomposition consumes oxygen and that is what actually kills fish.

Algae peaks across most of Canada from mid-June into August. Start prevention in spring with dye and a routine bacteria dose, and act at the first sign of growth rather than waiting for a full bloom.
A bacteria application in autumn cuts the nutrient load that would otherwise feed next spring.
