Overview
Blue Pond Dye is formulated to add an attractive blue tint to pond water while helping reduce sunlight penetration. It is commonly used to improve appearance, shade the water column, and support ongoing pond maintenance programs.
How does pond dye actually work?
It tints the water so less sunlight penetrates. Algae and submerged weed are photosynthetic - cut the light reaching depth and you slow their growth before it starts.
It is the cheapest preventive step available and the one most people skip, because it works quietly rather than visibly clearing an existing problem.
Blue or black?
Both cut light equally well - the difference is the look. Blue gives the classic bright lagoon appearance and suits ornamental and amenity ponds. Black gives a natural reflective surface that mirrors the sky and trees, and tends to suit naturalised or wooded settings.
Neither affects performance, so choose on the look you want.
When should I apply it?
Spring, before algae gets going. Dye is preventive - applying it to a pond already carrying a heavy bloom will not clear what is there.
Top up through the season as it dilutes with rainfall and outflow.
Is it safe for fish, pets and wildlife?
Pond dyes are formulated to be safe for fish, pets, livestock and wildlife at label rates. Follow the label for your water volume.
Dye will temporarily stain hands, clothing and porous surfaces during application - wear gloves and pour carefully at the shoreline.
How much do I need?
Dosing is by water volume. Estimate yours by multiplying average length by width by depth in feet, then by 7.48 for US gallons, and check that against the label rate.
Send us your dimensions if you would rather we worked it out.
Can dye ship in winter?
Liquid dyes can be damaged by freezing in transit, so there are periods over a Canadian winter when we will hold an order rather than ship it.
We will tell you before dispatch rather than let it arrive frozen.
