Rake or cutter — which tool for which job?

• Aquatic weed rake — for dragging floating mats, string algae and loose vegetation to shore. Throw it out, let it sink, draw it back. The same rake doubles as a muck rake for pulling sludge and leaf litter off the bottom in shallow water.
• Aquatic weed cutter — for rooted plants the rake cannot pull. A weighted blade cuts vegetation at the base so it can then be raked out. This is the tool for dense milfoil and cattail beds.
• Gas-powered weed cutter — for larger areas where hand cutting is impractical, and a realistic alternative to hiring a weed harvester for a private pond.

Work with the wind at your back where possible — cut and floating material drifts toward the far shore otherwise, and you will spend longer chasing it than cutting.

Why removal beats treatment alone

Chemical treatment kills weeds in place, and the decaying mass sinks, consumes oxygen and returns its nutrients to the pond — feeding next season's growth. Physically removing the material breaks that cycle. Where you do treat, remove the dead growth afterward rather than leaving it, and keep aeration running through the process.

Common questions

What is the difference between pond weeds and algae?

Weeds are rooted vascular plants with recognisable stems and leaves. Algae has no roots, stems or leaves and forms mats, films or suspended green water. Rakes and cutters handle weeds; algaecides handle algae. Using the wrong one is the most common reason a treatment appears to fail.

When is the best time to cut pond weeds?

Early to mid summer, once growth is established but before plants set seed. Cutting late in the season still clears the water but does far less to reduce next year's density.

Do I need a permit to remove weeds from a lake in Canada?

For a private pond on your own property, mechanical removal is generally unrestricted. On lakes and any water connected to a natural system, shoreline work may fall under provincial or federal fisheries rules. Check with your province before clearing a lakefront.
