What the pump has to move matters more than the brand on it. Start with the job, then match flow and head height.

Built to pass debris rather than block on it. The right choice for a skimmer-fed pond, a stocked pond with fish waste, or any system where a filter screen would clog between visits.

High-flow pumps for waterfalls, streams and general pond turnover. Size on the head height you need to lift the water, not just on the flow rating.

Smaller pumps for statuary, urns and self-contained features, including kits that arrive with a fountain head ready to run.

Cleanout pumps for pond drainage, plus Little Giant utility, effluent and magnetic-drive pumps and diaphragm pumps for freshwater transfer. The utility units are process and transfer pumps rather than pond pumps - check the fluid compatibility and duty cycle before ordering.

Flow ratings are measured at zero head

A pump rated 4,000 GPH does not deliver 4,000 GPH once it is lifting water eight feet up a waterfall. Tell us the height and the run and we will size on the flow you will actually get.

Size on Head Height, Not on the Number on the Box

Every pump on this page carries a flow rating, and every one of those ratings is measured at zero head - the pump sitting in water with nothing to lift against. The moment you ask it to push water up a waterfall, through pipe and around elbows, the real delivery drops, and on a tall feature it can drop a long way. Sizing on the headline number is the most common reason a new waterfall underwhelms.

The second decision is what the pump has to swallow. A skimmer-fed pond or one with fish produces debris, and a solids-handling pump is built to pass it rather than block on a screen. Put a screened pump in that setting and you will be cleaning it between visits. Conversely, a clean statuary feature or a small urn does not need solids handling and is better served by a compact pump matched to the fitting.

The Little Giant utility and magnetic-drive units in this collection sit apart from the pond range - they are process and transfer pumps, and fluid compatibility and duty cycle matter more than flow curves. If you are pumping anything other than pond water, tell us what, because the wrong seal material fails quickly. Need fittings or a filter to go with it? See pump parts and accessories.

  • Head height is the number that matters

Published flow is measured at zero lift. Every foot of rise and every fitting reduces what actually reaches the top.

  • Solids-handling versus screened

A skimmer-fed or stocked pond needs a pump that passes debris. A screened pump in that setting clogs between visits.

  • Turn the pond over roughly once an hour

A common working target for a stocked pond. Waterfalls are sized on width instead - flow per inch of spillway.

  • Utility pumps are not pond pumps

Little Giant mag-drive and transfer units are process equipment. Check fluid compatibility and duty cycle before ordering.

  • Running cost outlives purchase price

A pump running continuously for years costs far more in hydro than it did to buy. Efficiency is worth paying for.

Mike Singleton

If you have a pond, waterfall or fountain problem, I consider this THE place to go. I am a repeat customer over a decade, and highly recommend these folks. Ryan and his staff have made quick and creative-solution work of our pond and pump systems.

Mike Briggs

Fountain Depot had a huge selection of fountain nozzles, pumps and lights that were quality. Ryan was great and showed us how to properly build our water fountain so that it was bulletproof and easily maintained.

Matt J

I have had the pleasure of working with Ryan from Fountain Depot for the past year +. He designed and rebuilt our fountain from the ground up. They are a very knowledgeable team of guys. Our condo community could not be happier with the job they did for us. Highly recommend them for all your fountain needs.

Kathryn Pettitt

Ryan and the Fountain Depot team are phenomenal! I highly recommend them for all of your fountain repair and maintenance needs. Our water feature looks better than ever. They walked us through the repair process, made some fantastic recommendations, and provided us with a schedule for recommended maintenance.

Brandon

I highly recommend the Fountain Depot. Ryan and his team are incredibly knowledgeable and timely. We sought a floating fountain and underwater lights for our client, and Ryan delivered precisely what our client was desiring. The Fountain Place continues to maintain the fountain, and we have had zero issues.

Questions our techs answer every week

Head height, solids handling and duty cycle decide which pump survives the job. Here is what we get asked most.

  • Two numbers: the width of the spillway and the height you are lifting to. Wider spillways need more flow to look full, and every foot of rise cuts what the pump actually delivers.

Published flow ratings are measured at zero head, so a pump rated for 4,000 GPH will deliver considerably less at eight feet. Send us the width and the height and we will size on real delivery.

  • It passes debris rather than screening it out. If your pond is skimmer-fed, stocked with fish, or collects leaves, you want one - a screened pump in that setting clogs between visits.

For a clean statuary feature or a self-contained urn, solids handling is unnecessary and a compact pump is the better fit.

  • A common working target is turning the volume over roughly once an hour on a stocked pond. Lightly stocked ornamental ponds tolerate less; heavily stocked koi ponds want more.

Waterfalls are sized differently - on flow per inch of spillway width rather than on pond volume. If you have both, size for whichever is the larger duty.

  • Generally not the right tool. The Little Giant mag-drive and transfer units here are process pumps built for specific fluids and duty cycles, not continuous pond circulation.

If you are moving anything other than pond water, tell us what it is - seal and housing material compatibility matters and the wrong choice fails quickly.

  • Some do. The statuary and fountain kits arrive with a head ready to run. Most pond and waterfall pumps ship as the pump alone.

Check pump parts and accessories for fittings, or tell us your pipe size and we will include what you need.

  • It depends on whether the feature runs through winter. A pump left in a pond that freezes solid around it will be damaged.

If you are shutting down, the pump comes out, gets cleaned and stored somewhere above freezing. If you are running through, we will advise on what the setup needs. Ask before freeze-up.
