The fix is usually a smaller, better-matched unit than people expect. The one that disappoints is almost always the one chosen on spray height alone, then run off a cord that can't feed it.

Green by July, muck by August, trouble under the ice
Nearly every backyard pond and cottage waterfront problem traces back to the same root cause: still, oxygen-poor water. The season plays out the same way most years.
Green water and algae blooms
Warm, still, nutrient-loaded water blooms on schedule by mid-summer, and weeds take over the shallows. Circulation and oxygen go after the cause — treatments and dye work far better once the water is moving.
Muck underfoot, odour, mosquitoes
Organic matter settles and breaks down without oxygen, so the bottom goes soft underfoot and gives off a rotten-egg smell. The same stagnant corners are where mosquitoes breed.
Fish stressed in summer, lost under ice
Late-summer heat drives oxygen out of the water, and a pond sealed under snow and ice traps the gases coming off decaying muck. Winterkill is quiet — you find out in spring. Ice also pushes hard on cottage docks and boat lifts.

Surface area
Roughly how big the water is — in acres, or in feet by feet measured off a satellite image. This sets the size of the unit, and whether one is enough.
Average depth
Floating fountains suit ponds under roughly six feet average depth. Deeper than that and diffused aeration from the bottom moves far more of the water column for the money.
Distance to power
From the water's edge to the nearest outlet, and whether that circuit is 120V or 240V. On household power, cord length and amp draw are the real limit on unit size.
On a home pond the honest answer is often the cheaper one: a smaller unit sized correctly beats a larger one starved for power, which is why so many cottage installations come down to the cord run rather than the horsepower. Koi ponds want gentle, continuous aeration and good filtration rather than maximum spray height. If people swim off your dock, it is worth knowing Kasco surface aerators are ETL listed to UL and CSA standards, and that diffused systems keep the compressor on shore with nothing electrical in the water. Seasonal access is worth planning around too — most units come out before freeze-up and go back in the spring, so if you close up the cottage in October, tell us and we'll factor that in. Always follow the product label for dosing and timing, and keep aeration running through a heavy algae die-off. Decomposition consumes oxygen, and that is what actually kills fish.
