Aeration for Aquaculture, Fish Farms & Hatchery Ponds

Aeration for Aquaculture, Fish Farms & Hatchery Ponds

Kasco surface aerators and diffused aeration for fish farms, hatchery ponds and stocked ponds across Canada - sized to stocking density and feed rate, not just acreage.

Aquaculture, hatcheries & stocked ponds

The aerator is the cheapest thing in the pond.

Everything else in that water — the stock, the feed already converted into it, a season of growth — is riding on whether dissolved oxygen holds through a warm August night. Aeration is the one line on the budget that decides whether the rest of it survives, which is why it gets sized against biomass and specified with a spare, not bought on price.

  • Sized on stocking, not acreage. We ask for species and stocking or feed rate alongside surface area and depth, because oxygen demand tracks what you are feeding, not how big the pond looks.
  • Redundancy is part of the quote. A second unit or a defined backup plan, on the plain arithmetic that a spare costs less than one dead-air night.
  • Serviceable, with parts on the shelf. Authorized Kasco dealer and certified repair centre in Markham, holding genuine Kasco parts — so a failed unit is a repair, not a lost crop.
  • A real number back, usually within one business day. Specific models and delivered pricing in CAD, not a brochure.

What happens after you hit send

Most suppliers in this category send you to a contact page and go quiet. Here is exactly what we do instead.

STEP 01

You tell us what the water is carrying

Surface area and average depth, species and rough stocking or feed rate, the power available at the pond, and whether you run seasonally or year round.

STEP 02

We size the system, free

Oxygen transfer matched to the biomass rather than the acreage, the electrical checked against what is actually at the pond, and a straight answer on where a second unit or a shelf spare belongs.

STEP 03

You get a real quote in one business day

Specific models, cord lengths, control panel, delivered pricing in CAD — and the replacement parts worth keeping on site so a failure is measured in hours.

Three ways oxygen goes wrong

The failures a stocked pond actually has

You know the science. The point of listing these is that they fail on different timescales, and a system sized for only one of them still loses the crop to the other two.

The hour before dawn in August

Warm water holds less oxygen exactly when stocked fish need more of it. Algae and pond respiration draw it down overnight, and a heavily fed pond can cross the stress line before sunrise.

Winterkill under sealed ice

Ice and snow shut gas exchange off entirely. Nothing looks wrong from the bank until the melt, and by then the loss is already counted.

Chronically marginal oxygen

No dead fish, no obvious event — just poor feed conversion and slow growth quietly costing you the margin on the whole cycle.

How we size it

Stocking density decides this, not surface area

The rules of thumb that work for recreational water stop applying once fish density rises. Send us what you have and we work from it; approximate figures are fine.

Surface area and average depth

Sets the horsepower and decides whether surface aeration, bottom diffused aeration or both is the right approach for the water column you need to turn over.

Species, stocking and feed rate

Oxygen demand tracks biomass and how much you are feeding. This is the number that separates a working system from one that only holds on mild nights.

Power at the pond

120V, 240V single-phase or three-phase, and how far the run is from the water's edge. Rural sites are rarely three-phase, and that shapes the whole specification.

Tell us as well whether you need year-round operation or seasonal coverage, because winter running changes the equipment choice. Then plan redundancy deliberately: a second unit, or a spare on the shelf and a defined way to get it in the water at 2am. The arithmetic is not subtle — the cost of one dead-air night exceeds the cost of the spare, every time. Where an operation is far from us, we will also size the system so your own electrician can install and swap it without waiting on anyone.

We specify mainly from Kasco surface aerators, the aquaculture workhorse: independent Auburn University testing puts the AF series at up to 3.0 lbs of oxygen per horsepower-hour, they are ETL listed to UL and CSA standards, they run in freshwater or saltwater with a sacrificial zinc anode, and the 3 HP and 5 HP models come in 240V single-phase so a site without three-phase service can still run serious capacity. For deeper ponds and winter operation, RobustAire diffused aeration keeps the compressor on shore and pushes air from the bottom, with nothing electrical in the pond; diffuser accessories and airline and smaller pond air pumps cover hatchery tanks and holding ponds. Kasco control panels handle scheduling and motor protection, genuine replacement parts keep units serviceable across long seasons, and we carry fish food and care for smaller stocked-pond operations.

Why fish farms buy from us

The part that matters is what happens when a unit fails

Fountain Depot carries 50+ years of fountain and aeration experience through Fountain Place. For an operation whose crop depends on the equipment running, that shows up as parts on the shelf and a repair bench you can drive to.

Before you buy

Frequently asked questions

It depends on stocking density and feed rate more than pond size. A heavily fed production pond needs far more oxygen transfer per acre than a lightly stocked one.

Send us your pond dimensions, species and stocking or feed rates and we will size the system to actual demand.

In independent Auburn University testing, Kasco AF-series surface aerators deliver a standard aeration efficiency of up to 3.0 lbs of oxygen per horsepower-hour.

The units are ETL listed to UL and CSA standards.

Surface aerators deliver rapid, high-rate oxygen transfer where fish are concentrated - the standard aquaculture tool. Diffused aeration suits deeper ponds and continuous whole-pond circulation, with the compressor safely on shore.

Many operations run both: diffused as the baseline, surface units for peak demand.

Yes. Kasco's 3 HP and 5 HP surface aerators are available in 240V single-phase configurations.

Rural sites without three-phase service can still run high-capacity units, and smaller units run on standard 120V.

Keep gas exchange open through winter. Diffused aeration or a de-icer maintains open water so oxygen enters and toxic gases escape from under the ice.

Position winter aeration to avoid super-chilling the entire pond - ask us for placement guidance for your depth.

Kasco surface aerators operate in freshwater or saltwater and are fitted with a sacrificial zinc anode for corrosion protection.

Tell us about your water conditions and we will confirm the right configuration.
