Shop Diffused Aeration by System Size

Diffuser count drives everything - cabinet size, compressor count, and whether tubing is in the box. Start with the depth and acreage of your water.

How many diffusers does your pond need?

Diffuser count and placement matter more than raw horsepower on a diffused system. Get them wrong and you aerate half the pond. Send us your acreage, maximum depth and a rough shape, and our techs will lay out the system before you order.

Diffused Aeration Lifts the Whole Column. Surface Units Do Not.

A diffused system sits on the bank, not in the water. A compressor pushes air down weighted tubing to diffusers on the pond bottom, and the rising column of bubbles drags cold, oxygen-poor water up to the surface where it can gas off. That circulation is the entire point - the bubbles themselves add relatively little oxygen. What they do is turn the pond over.

This is why depth is the deciding factor. Below roughly eight feet, a surface aerator or fountain works the top layer while everything beneath it stratifies and goes anoxic through a hot Ontario August. Bottom diffusion reaches it. It is also why diffused systems run through winter on many Canadian ponds, keeping a hole open and preventing the winterkill that follows a season sealed under ice.

Sizing is about diffuser count and placement rather than horsepower. A long, irregular or multi-lobed pond needs diffusers distributed to reach each section - one big compressor feeding one badly placed diffuser will aerate a fraction of the water. Send us the shape along with the acreage and depth, and we will lay it out. Comparing approaches? Read surface aerator vs diffused aeration.

  • Tubing stops being included at RA4

RA1 through RA3 ship with 100 to 300 ft of 3/8 in tubing in the box. RA4 and every larger system need tubing ordered separately - budget for it.

  • Lifetime warranty on diffusers and cabinet

RobustAire covers the compressor 3 years, tubing 15 years, and the diffusers and cabinet for life. Home Series is a flat 2 years on everything.

  • Dual-loop versus single-loop diffusers

RobustAire uses dual-loop diffusers; Home Series uses single-loop. More membrane area means finer bubbles and better transfer per unit of air.

  • Cabinet noise is a real consideration

RobustAire cabinets use AireGuard noise-reducing construction. On a residential shoreline the compressor is the thing neighbours notice.

  • Serviced in Canada, not shipped south

Compressor rebuild kits, diffuser membranes and tubing stocked and fitted on our own bench in Markham.

I have had the pleasure of working with Ryan from Fountain Depot for the past year +. He designed and rebuilt our fountain from the ground up. They are a very knowledgeable team of guys. Our condo community could not be happier with the job they did for us. Highly recommend them for all your fountain needs.

Kathryn Pettitt

Ryan and the Fountain Depot team are phenomenal! I highly recommend them for all of your fountain repair and maintenance needs. Our water feature looks better than ever. They walked us through the repair process, made some fantastic recommendations, and provided us with a schedule for recommended maintenance.

Brandon

I highly recommend the Fountain Depot. Ryan and his team are incredibly knowledgeable and timely. We sought a floating fountain and underwater lights for our client, and Ryan delivered precisely what our client was desiring. The Fountain Place continues to maintain the fountain, and we have had zero issues.

Questions our techs answer every week

Diffuser count, placement and tubing runs decide whether a diffused system works. Here is what we get asked most.

How many diffusers does my pond need? Does the system come with tubing? What is the difference between RobustAire and the Home Series? Diffused aeration or a surface aerator - which does my pond need? Can I run diffused aeration through a Canadian winter? How noisy is the compressor?
  • Diffuser count is driven by surface acreage, but placement is driven by shape. A round one-acre pond behaves very differently from a long, narrow or multi-lobed one of the same size.

Systems run from a single diffuser on the Home Series and RA1 up to twelve on the RA12. Send us your acreage, maximum depth and a rough outline of the shape and we will lay out the placement before you order.

How many diffusers does my pond need?
  • Up to a point. RA1 includes 100 ft of 3/8 in tubing, RA2 and RA2DP include 200 ft, and RA3 includes 300 ft. Every Home Series system includes SureSink tubing for its diffusers.

From RA4 upward, tubing is ordered separately. On a large pond that is a meaningful line item, so factor the run from the cabinet to each diffuser into your budget.

Does the system come with tubing?
  • Scale and construction. Home Series uses single-loop diffusers with a 1/4 HP basemount compressor and a 2-year warranty on all items - built for backyard ponds with one or two diffusers.

RobustAire uses dual-loop diffusers in a noise-reducing AireGuard cabinet, scales from one to twelve diffusers with up to four compressors, and carries 3 years on the compressor, 15 on the tubing, and lifetime coverage on the diffusers and cabinet.

What is the difference between RobustAire and the Home Series?
  • Depth decides it. A surface aerator or fountain works the top few feet and covers a wide area. Diffused aeration releases air at the bottom and lifts the entire column, which is what deep or stratified water actually needs.

Under about eight feet, a surface aerator is usually enough. Deeper than that, diffusion is the right tool, and on larger water the two are often run together.

Diffused aeration or a surface aerator - which does my pond need?
  • Yes, and on many ponds it is the reason to buy one. Because the cabinet sits on the bank and only tubing enters the water, there is no motor in the pond to pull out before freeze-up.

Run through winter and the rising bubbles keep an opening in the ice, letting trapped gases escape and reducing the risk of winterkill. Diffuser placement should be adjusted for winter operation - ask us how before the first freeze.

Can I run diffused aeration through a Canadian winter?
  • Quieter than most people expect, but it is not silent - it is a piston compressor running continuously. RobustAire cabinets are built with AireGuard noise-reducing construction specifically for this reason.

On a residential shoreline, siting matters as much as the cabinet. We can advise on placement relative to the house and the property line.
