What Does It Cost to Run a Pond De-Icer All Winter in Canada?

Running a Kasco de-icer around the clock costs roughly $2 to $3.50 per day at typical Canadian hydro rates — but almost nobody should run one around the clock. On a thermostat that switches the unit on only when temperatures require it, most owners cut that figure substantially. Here are the real numbers, from Kasco's published specifications, and how to keep them down.

The actual power draw, by model

From Kasco's de-icer manual, the operating draw for each model — and what that means in kilowatts:

  • 2400D (1/2 HP, 120V): 5.4 amps ≈ 0.65 kW
  • 3400D (3/4 HP, 120V): 6.6 amps ≈ 0.79 kW
  • 3400HD (3/4 HP, 240V): 3.1 amps ≈ 0.74 kW
  • 4400D (1 HP, 120V): 9.1 amps ≈ 1.09 kW
  • 4400HD (1 HP, 240V): 4.5 amps ≈ 1.08 kW

Note the 240V models draw about half the amps but essentially the same power — 240V is easier on your circuit, not cheaper to run.

The math, worked through

Electricity cost is simply kilowatts × hours × your rate. Take a 3/4 HP 3400D at 0.79 kW, running 24 hours: about 19 kWh per day. At a blended Ontario residential rate of roughly 12¢/kWh, that's about $2.28 per day, or roughly $70 a month of continuous running. A 1/2 HP unit runs closer to $56 a month; a 1 HP unit closer to $94. Rates vary by province and plan — substitute your own ¢/kWh into the same formula — but the shape of the answer is consistent: continuous operation is real money over a five-month winter.

The thermostat changes everything

Here's the part that matters: a de-icer doesn't need to run when it's −2°C and sunny. A Kasco C-10 thermostat panel switches the unit on only when air temperature drops to the point you set, and off again when it warms — so the unit works hard through cold snaps and sits idle through mild spells. Actual run-time depends entirely on your winter, but in a typical southern Ontario season with long stretches near freezing, thermostat control commonly cuts run hours dramatically compared to 24/7 operation — the panel typically pays for itself within a season or two. The C-20 adds a timer on top of the thermostat for even finer control.

Three more ways to keep the bill down

Size correctly rather than oversizing — a 1 HP unit where 3/4 HP suffices is 27 kWh a day versus 19; our sizing guide covers this. Position for the job — an angled unit protecting exactly the dock face works less than one fighting to keep an oversized area open. Maintain the unit — a fouled propeller or worn parts make the motor work harder; fall inspection (see our winterizing checklist — the same steps apply) keeps it running at spec.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to run a de-icer all winter in Canada?
Run continuously, roughly $60–$95 per month depending on model and your hydro rate — but on a C-10 thermostat, which only runs the unit in freezing conditions, most owners pay a fraction of that.

Is a 240V de-icer cheaper to run than a 120V one?
No — it draws half the amps but consumes essentially the same kilowatts. Choose 240V for circuit capacity, not operating cost.

What temperature should I set the thermostat to?
Set it so the unit engages before sustained ice can form — around the freezing mark for most installations. The C-10 adjusts from there, letting you tune for your site.

Does a de-icer cost more to run in Manitoba than in southern Ontario?
On a thermostat, yes — more hours below freezing means more run-time. That's the honest trade-off of a harsher winter, and correct sizing matters even more there.
